Want to demonstrate your carbon neutrality through an internationally
recognised Standard? Our experienced ISO 14068-1 consultants can help.
ISO 14068-1 is the international Standard for achieving and demonstrating carbon neutrality. It is part of the ISO 14060 family of Standards supporting organisations in providing clarity and consistency for quantifying, monitoring, reporting, validating and verifying GHG emissions and removals and carbon neutrality.
The Standard promotes a hierarchy of actions once an organisation has quantified their GHG emissions with a carbon footprint, to reduce the direct and indirect GHG emissions, enhance GHG removals and then to offset the residual GHG emissions. This is documented in a carbon neutrality management plan following a continual improvement approach to reduce the use of offsetting over time.
ISO 14068-1 also builds on existing Standards addressing GHG quantification, reporting, validation and verification, such as ISO 14064-1.
Verification to ISO 14068-1 demonstrates your organisation’s commitment to climate action and trusted evidence of your carbon neutrality on the path to net zero.
Contact us to start your journey toward ISO 14068-1 verification.

Verify your carbon neutrality claim through a rigorous and robust framework to reduce carbon emissions, achieve carbon neutrality and source credible carbon credits, avoiding greenwash
Set targets including short and long-term targets related to GHG emission reductions and GHG removal enhancements to establish clear goals, define your future direction and provide a benchmark for your progress
Identify areas in which you can improve energy efficiency, reduce energy consumption and resource costs to increase profitability
Comply with current and future environmental regulations and legislation
Strengthen your green credentials in the marketplace, enhance your organisations reputation and appeal to environmentally conscious stakeholders
Provides a clear message of your environmental commitment to combat climate change
Define the boundaries of your facilities and quantify of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and GHG removals (carbon footprint), in line with ISO 14064-1 or GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard
Develop a carbon neutrality management plan including you carbon neutrality pathway and the steps to plan, implement and achieve a reduction of GHG emissions and GHG removal enhancements
Offset the residual GHG emissions to achieve carbon neutrality, through credible and recognised carbon credits
Provide a carbon neutrality report and carbon neutrality claim, when all requirements of ISO 14068-1 are met. Carbon neutrality claims may then be verified by an external ISO assessor in accordance with ISO 14064-3 or an equivalent verification Standard

Carbon neutral is a condition in which, during a specified period of time, the carbon footprint (sum of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and GHG removals) has been reduced as a result of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions or GHG removal enhancements and, if greater than zero, is then counterbalanced by offsetting – ultimately you do not emit any more greenhouse gases than you remove from the atmosphere.
In ISO14068-1, Carbon neutrality is primarily achieved through GHG emission reductions, then GHG removal enhancements before offsetting.
Carbon credits that are used for offsetting need to meet certain criteria outlined in ISO 14068-1 and are only used after GHG emission reductions and GHG removal enhancements have been made in line with the carbon neutrality management plan.
Carbon neutrality is the state of being carbon neutral.
In line with the hierarchy approach an organisation is required to implement measures to achieve carbon neutrality using the following hierarchy of actions, in order of preference:
. GHG emission reductions within the boundary of the subject;
· GHG removal enhancements within the boundary of the subject;
· offsetting the carbon footprint.
This is outlined in a carbon neutrality management plan which follows a continual improvement approach to reduce the use of offsetting over time.
The principles below are fundamental to ensure that the achievement and demonstration of the carbon neutrality and that this is undertaken in a true and fair manner, is scientifically and technically valid, and is communicated in an accurate and non-misleading way.
These are the basis for the requirements and guidance in ISO 14068-1.
Organisations can be verified to ISO 14068-1 by achieving and demonstrating carbon neutrality, including emissions reduction, removal enhancement, and responsible offsetting.
Verification to ISO 14068-1 can apply to organisations of all sectors and sizes. It can be used to demonstrate the carbon neutrality of your entire business or to specific activities, such as products, services, buildings, projects, or events.
Verification demonstrates your commitment to climate action, enhances the credibility and transparency of GHG quantification, monitoring, reporting, validation and verification and facilitates the development and implementation of GHG management strategies and plans to reach carbon neutrality.
